Telephone wire baskets and bangles are hand-woven by home based rural and urban women in KwaZulu-Natal. They can produce one-of-a-kind baskets from insulated copper wire remnants, or they can produce design concepts in unlimited quantities from specially manufactured insulated mild steel wire, in shades of fashion colours to specification. This is a 30-year-old design-led initiative for the fusion of contemporary design with traditional craft skills. A means through which intricate weaving techniques can be protected for future generations. Photograph: Michelle Schingerlin
